BROTHER's
musical journey continues with the release of the band's 10th
indie CD, Pax Romana MMV.
Official release date for the CD is December 17th.
Pax Romana MMV marks BROTHER's return to the studio with
Dalbo ... their first time since the recording of 'Your
Backyard' in 1998. "We explore new territory here and at same
time make a definite return to our roots," says Angus.

'Three words. Fat,
deep, sensual' - Hamish
What marks the difference between June's advance pressing and
the official release of this CD? BROTHER returned to the
studio to remix the music and add an additional track. The
official release of Pax Romana MMV also includes video footage
from 'the making of' by b.o.b. Cahill and the lyrics poetry book
style by Philly tribesman, Jeffrey Sauers. An enhanced CD
release is a first for the Aussies.

australians all

Students from Ulladulla High School, somewhere in Australia, filled
six key positions recently, in BROTHER's 3rd performance at
the Milton theatre for 2005. The band has previously featured local
artists Annie Bryant from the Good Vibrations series and all-women,
tribal drum group, Pamoja.
When the band was last back in Australia, members Angus, Hamish and
Dalbo, in conjunction with Music-Play for Life, spent a day in at
the high school. The band held a number of mass workshops and
recording sessions with students, arranged with teachers Anne Fair
and George Spero, finishing with a couple of performances. "We were
totally impressed by the vibe in the school and got a real feel for
the talent that's being nurtured there", said a member of BROTHER,
speaking off the record.
So when BROTHER arrived in town a few days prior to their
theatre show they got in touch with music teacher, George Spero, and
"before we knew it" the positions were filled. Taking the opening
slot were Amy Davidson, Kimberly Snellson and Mel Reberge with a
combination of harmony vocals, guitar and piano, while Christof and
Daniel Spero, musicians in their own right, became cameramen for the
evening. Dean Lawson ran the light show.
"At the end of it all, music and art are about taking what you know,
putting it with what you feel and going with the flow, and that's
just what these guys and girls did."
BROTHER is currently working on the completion of two 'local'
projects ... a DVD of the Ulladulla High workshop recording and live
show which will highlight the creative process of the students and
include a studio mix incorporating the students, of one track from
the new BROTHER CD; and a final mix of the mantra 'peace on
earth' which began with a recording of 600 children at Milton PS
just before Christmas last year. "One of our producers in the US is
working on that project which includes different recorded sections
from all over regional NSW. To think it started right here with a
bunch of local kids".
Australians all over ... the world.

|
|
|
Hamish, Angus, and Tina Broad, from the BROTHER executive
management team and Urban Cave producer, share their thoughts on
being indie in Daylle Deanna Schwartz’s recently release book,
“I Don’t Need a Record Deal!”
'As fresh-faced kids almost straight off the farm in Oz, we
never contemplated the possibility of making our own records. We
were biding time until we landed a big record deal and lived
happily ever after. Suddenly, we’re an “indie success story”
with our own label, catalogue, and lifestyle brand.' Hamish
'BROTHER exemplifies the indie spirit and a successful
indie lifestyle. Their success is a tribute to what having great
music and putting in hard work can accomplish. The Mongrel
Mythology DVD provides a taste of their music and indie ethic."

oops on mars

|
|
|
Recent reports of the Earth's closest encounter with the red planet
in recorded history are too late to be news worthy, BRO watch
dog, Joe Biersack, points out. By two years in fact. read
original posting
Astronomer, Nick Greene on his
website explains earth's intimate relationship with Mars ...
'Imagine two cars on a race track. If one is closer to the center of
the track and traveling faster, it will eventually catch up to and
pass the outer car. This is what is happening with Earth and Mars
... we are 'lapping' the Red Planet."
The closest approach this year will be on November 7th and while
'spectacular, it is not a record breaker.'

re-thinking society
july 2005 |
|
|
|
|
The Wellbeing Manifesto 'suggests a radical rethink for the
basis of our society', explained manifesto co-author and
Australia Institute director, Clive Hamilton. Speaking on ABC
radio in Australia, Monday night, Clive put simply what
many people on both sides of the political fence feel, "There
are enormous commercial powers acting very successfully on
people to make them act contrary to their best interests".
Offered as a serious and far-reaching antidote for our addiction
to the concept and pursuit of affluence, the manifesto makes the
challenge of a re-determination of how we act as individuals and
as a collective, in order to create a peaceful, flourishing and
mutually supportive society.

the red planet
july 2005 |
|
|
|
Sources
have reported that the planet Mars will, at the end of August 2005,
appear in the night sky as large as the full moon to the naked eye.
Read on ...
The Red Planet is about to be spectacular!
This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter
that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets
in recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is in
2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on Mars and perturbs its
orbit, astronomers can only be certain that Mars has not come this
close to Earth in the last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as
60,000 years before it happens again.
The encounter will culminate on August 27th when Mars comes to
within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and will be (next to the moon) the
brightest object in the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of
-2.9 and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest
75-power magnification Mars will look as large as the full moon to
the naked eye.
Mars will be easy to spot. At the beginning of August it will rise
in the east at 10.00 pm
and reach its azimuth at about 3.00 am.
By the end of August when the two planets are closest, Mars will
rise at nightfall and reach its highest point in the sky at
12:30a.m. That's pretty convenient to see something that no human
being has seen in recorded history. So, mark your calendar at the
beginning of August to see Mars grow progressively brighter and
brighter throughout the month.
Share this with your children and grandchildren.
NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN

'Throughout
history sages have counseled that happiness is not a goal but a
consequence of how we live, that it comes from being content with
what we have.
Today, we are sold a different message ... that we will be happy
only if we have more money and more of the things money buys.
Human experience and scientific research do not support this
belief.'
'The challenge of our age is to build a new politics that is
committed, above all, to improving our wellbeing.'
A group of committed Australians has launched a bold and timely
initiative for a better alternative ... a new choice for our future,
our children and our own lives. It's relevance to our time
reverberates far beyond the shores of the island continent.

In an unusual move for the band known for it's relentless summer
schedule, the members of BROTHER have returned to Los Angeles
only 2 weeks into their summer touring season. Rumors have been
circulating that a new CD is in the works, however sources close to
the band will neither confirm nor deny this is the reason for the
tour 'break'. The band has included a number of new songs in
it's recent concerts that are as yet unrecorded, including 'take me
down' ("a song about standing tall against injustice"), 'photograph'
("the song born of our indifference to our fellow humans") and 'so
not real'. Angus, Dalbo, and Hamish have made public their desire to
capture the energy of these live versions in the studio, and it is
known that the band has met recently with LA producer, Guy Erez. It
is unclear whether these meeting were of a business nature. When
contacted earlier, Erez would only confirm that he had indeed met
twice with the members of BROTHER in the last few weeks.

update on MPS
recording session
may 2005 |
|
|
|
NEWS FLASH ...
update on MPS recording session with BROTHER
Just prior to Christmas 2004 and on the eve of BROTHER's
first Australian shows in 10 years, the brothers set up at Milton
Public School in New South Wales and recorded the entire school ...
about 600 kids ... singing the mantra 'peace on earth'
I've had people in the surf, on the beach, down the street, ask me
how the song is going.
Well, the whole school singing 'peace
on earth' has begun a journey around Australia. Our recording with
MPS has inspired BROTHER to create a piece that has bits in
it from all over Australia. We are recording with every community we
can as the band tours this wide, brown land.
So far, we've also added drums and percussion from elders and kids
in Mudgee, pipes and drums from the Scots School in Bathurst, and
strings, vocals and drums from the Parkes Symphony Orchestra. And
the students from MPS are the inspiration for it all!
Slowly but surely we're building a wonderful Australian made message
for all humans - 'peace on earth' is getting closer.
thank you everyone,
hamish, BROTHER

I will always remember him fondly with a smile on his face beating

showmanship really shone through on stage and he seemed to find his

go. A lesson for all of us in the importance of finding our peace

G'day everybody!
It's been great to be back in the U.S after a successful trip to OZ.
Hamish, Angus and I are feeling pumped, focused and ready to move
ahead in leaps and bounds.
I thought we should give you all an update on the DVD as many humans
were inquiring about it at the Coach House. Bob and Sam have
edited down a whole lot of great footage from '04 and we're now all
involved in piecing it together into a summary of last year's many
great moments on and off the road.
We will be combining some interviews, music videos, live
performances and backstage footage all into the BROTHER
mongrel format in order to share with you the year and our
excitement of getting the band back together. There is some work
ahead for us and again, thanks for your patience. We will have this
puppy out of it's cage and barking at your door in another couple of
months!
